PRIME MINISTER – IRISH TREACHERY MEANS THEY MUST STARVE

On 13 February 1849, Prime Minister Lord John Russel wrote to the Earl of Clarendon, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, advising him to ‘leave things to the operation of natural courses.’ He was referring to several letters from the Earl appealing for some intervention to help mitigate what was known as ‘the Great Hunger’ in Ireland, then in entering its fifth year.

THE RAF’S SATURATION BOMBING OF DRESDEN KILLS TENS OF THOUSANDS

On the night of 13 February 1945, as Nazi Germany was collapsing during the last weeks of the Second World War, three hundred Lancaster heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force set off on the first of four air strikes involving a total of 796 Lancasters and 311 American B-17 flying fortresses. Over the next twenty four hours, all the bombers had just one target, the German city of Dresden.

CHURCHILL REFUSES TO CONSIDER URGENT FOOD AID FOR ITALY

On 13 February 1945, during the closing weeks of the Second World War,  Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander was attending a lavish lunch on board the luxurious ocean liner SS Franconia with Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a few senior government officials.
