Speaking to a crowd in Liverpool on this day in 1931, Winston Churchill expressed his fear and indignation that Britain might ‘loose’ India.

On 2 February 1940, during discussions in Cabinet, Winston Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, strongly defended the status-quo in British India, blocking a proposal which would have allowed the subcontinent to draw up its own constitution once the war ended.

Cypriot Petros Petrides revealed in 2010, in an interview with journalist Ian Cobain, that he had been detained as a schoolboy by British troops on 2 February 1959, in the town of Famagusta on the east coast of Cyprus.
