On this day in 1938, the Daily Express editorial, under the headline ‘Shall All Come In ?’ argued against allowing into Britain a large number of desperate Jewish refugees facing murderous persecution in Nazi Germany.  It claimed that despite ‘powerful agitation here to admit all Jewish refugees without question or discrimination…  It would be unwise to overload the basket…’  The newspaper asked ‘What if Poland, Hungary, Rumania also expel their Jewish citizens ? Must we let them in too ?’  and it reasoned that ‘because we DON’T want anti-Jewish uproar we DO need to show common sense in not admitting all applicants.’1
