On 21 September 2003, Dr Ian Hill, an experienced British pathologist, explained to the distressed father of an Iraqi hotel receptionist how his son, Baha Mousa, had died at the hands of British troops. He felt obliged to be brutally honest, using the words ‘ligature’, ‘asphyxia’ and ‘restraint.’  Mousa had been one of ten innocent Iraqis who had been beaten and punched and then forced into a restraint position, which in the extreme heat had killed him through asphyxiation.1
