On 25 March 2011, RAF Reaper Drone pilots, stationed at a U.S. Air Force base in Nevada, were authorised to strike two pick up trucks in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. Among the occupants of the lorries, situated over 7,000 miles away from the drone operators, were the intended targets of the assassination, an alleged Taliban commander and a man suspected of being an associate. They were both obliterated. However, British soldiers based locally, who were sent to make a battle damage assessment, reported that six civilians had also been travelling in the vehicles, four of whom had also been killed and two injured.1
