On 24 March 1933, the Daily Express reinforced anti-Semitic prejudice with a front page splash portraying Jews as an all powerful bourgeois plutocracy.  Under the headline ‘Judea Declares War on Germany,’ it reported on the decision of some Jews to boycott German products in reaction to the murderous Nazi persecution.  Both the headline and the content blatantly pandered to public perceptions of Jews acting as a mafia with a stranglehold on international trade and finance, informing readers that ‘the whole of Israel throughout the world is uniting to declare an economic and financial war on Germany.’ It added that ‘Germany is a heavy borrower in foreign money markets where Jewish influence is considerable,’ and warned that ‘a concerted boycott by Jewish (traders) is likely to involve grave damage to the German export trade.’1
